Caley Jags manager Terry Butcher has kicked off a scheme that helps young people in disadvantaged communities.

Sportability Merkinch is an initiative to improve sports opportunities for young people in the Merkinch area of the city.

The project, run by The Merkinch Partnership, has been bosted by £20,000 from Invergordon-based Albyn Housing Society’s Wider Role Fund, which is backed by the Scottish Government.

Its aim is to recruit and train volunteers in sports coaching, who can then work towards government-recognised qualifications and take part in child-protection courses.

It is hoped this will mean sports opportunities and facilities for youngsters in Merkinch, and the Caley Jags gaffer is happy to help promote this positive scheme.

Butch said: "I am delighted to be involved with this programme. Sport builds confidence and is extremely beneficial to self-esteem.

"It also helps to cut down anti-social behaviour. Volunteers within this project will reap the health benefits and gain excellent qualifications."

The project needs minibus drivers and volunteers, so if anyone can help out, call 01463 238159 or 07951977922.
