Inverness manager Terry Butcher was at a loss to explain his side's poor first half display against St Johnstone but was relieved to earn a 1-1 draw.

"We had two teams turn up," said Butcher. "One for the first half and one for the second half.

"We're delighted with the point because we played poorly in the first half. We looked like a team of strangers.

"Such was the difference between our last two games and that, you have to scratch your head and ask why?"

Inverness sit fourth in the Scottish Premier League thanks to a Jonny Hayes equaliser on 71 minutes against a Saints side that had controlled the first hour of the match.

"You try to make sure they have the right mental approach, the right hunger and desire," Butcher explained.

"We saw that in the second half but it took a bit of a rollicking at half-time.

"Crawford Allen, the fourth official, asked if I was making any substitutions and I said I don't have ten to put on.

"Ryan Esson made a good save in the first half to deny St Johnstone a second goal, so we are fortunate to get the point, there's no doubt about that.

"But we could have won it if the game had gone on for another five or ten minutes.

"If you get something from a game you haven't played particularly well, then the result is the main thing.

"I had a bit of a go at the players afterwards and said we can't keep being up and down.

"When we look at the SPL table you think 'wait a minute, we've got nothing to be afraid of'. We're in a good position, that's three matches in a row unbeaten.

"When we get the ball down and pass it and get it wide, like we did in the second half, we are a threat but we need more of that right from the first whistle."
